Why fair jewelry?
Child labor and dangerous working conditions are unfortunately common in the artisanal mining of gold and silver. Many miners risk their health and even their lives every day. In addition, they use toxic chemicals such as mercury and cyanide, which severely harm people, nature, and animals.
But there is another way: There is gold and silver that is mined and certified under fair and controlled conditions in artisanal mining. We have decided to craft all Verdelia jewelry pieces from Fairmined silver and gold.

What is Fairmined?
Fairmined stands for responsibly sourced gold and silver that is mined under fair labor conditions and environmentally friendly methods.
The Fairmined standard was developed by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) and is specifically aimed at artisanal and small-scale mining organizations, not large industrial companies.
In order to receive the Fairmined certification, small-scale mining organizations must meet the standard’s requirements and undergo annual audits by independent inspectors to renew their certification.
Our Fairmined License

The goal of the Fairmined standard is to encourage organized, profitable, and socially as well as environmentally sustainable artisanal mining.
-
HUMAN RIGHTS
In artisanal mining, many workers are exposed to unsafe working conditions, receive inadequate pay, and are often insufficiently protected from health risks. The Fairmined standard addresses these issues: it prohibits child labor, promotes gender equality, and protects against discrimination. Additionally, it ensures fair wages and access to health and safety measures.
-
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY MINING
The extraction of precious metals can have a significant impact on the environment. Toxic chemicals such as mercury and cyanide, which are often used improperly in traditional artisanal mining, contaminate rivers and soils, endangering both humans and animals. The Fairmined standard ensures that environmental harm is minimized. It requires the safe and controlled use of chemicals and mandates the restoration of ecosystems after mining to protect nature in the long term.
-
ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY
Many miners struggle with unstable incomes and often have no access to regulated markets, which puts them at an economic disadvantage. The Fairmined standard guarantees fair prices for gold and silver and provides mining organizations with access to regulated and fair markets. Additionally, they receive premiums that are invested in projects within their communities, promoting economic stability and the common good. Go to Fairmined Premium Report 2022

SUPPLY CHAIN TRANSPARENCY
The origin of gold and silver is often unclear, which increases the risk of illegal and unethical practices. The Fairmined standard ensures that the origin of the precious metals is traceable throughout the entire supply chain. Transparent trade relationships build trust and ensure fair conditions for all parties involved.
On-the-ground Impact
Gold and silver are extracted where they naturally occur – simply abstaining from it would likely not change that. What matters is how the precious metals are obtained. By supporting responsible mining practices, not only are better conditions created for the environment, but people on-site are also given sustainable development opportunities and a fair share of the economic success.
